Spencer Van Johnson was born December 28,1956 to Clinton and Nelvenia Johnson.
He was educated in the Chicago Public Schools, including Lindblom Technical High
School where he lettered in football. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps
and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. As a young man Spencer confessed his belief in Christ
and was baptized. He attended New Tabernacle Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. N.L. Russell Sr.

Spencer Van Johnson was born December 28,1956 to Clinton and Nelvenia Johnson.
He was educated in the Chicago Public Schools, including Lindblom Technical High
School where he lettered in football. After graduation he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps
and was stationed at Camp Pendleton in California. As a young man Spencer confessed his belief in Christ
and was baptized. He attended New Tabernacle Baptist Church under the pastorate of Rev. N.L. Russell Sr.
Spencer was a member of the Youth and Young Adult Choir and was New Tabernacle's first percussionist.
His spirit of worship also led several of his close friends to salvation and New Tabernacle.
Spencer was united in marriage to Merlene Barrow. Their union was blessed with three children.
After leaving the United States Marine Corps, Spencer worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier.
He also continued his love for the drums by playing for a host of different gospel groups.
His love for the outdoors also inspired him to teach his children basic survival training.
Spencer was called home September 19, 2016. Preceding him in death were his mother Nelvenia,
his sisters Ernestine, Tina, Wanda, and his brother Bernard.He leaves to cherish his memory his wife Merlene,
his children Kenipha Williams (Eliot), LaTrica, Spencer Jr.(Ashley), his father Clinton,
seven grandchildren Charles, Ashaunte', Tre', Alayna, Shanelle, Keme, and Elliot Jr.,
three brothers Michael, Clinton Jr., and Larry, two sisters Gwendolyn and Theresa, and a host of cousins,
nieces, nephews, and friends.
